Lithuania’s Court Dismisses Notary Fee Case

The Regional Administrative Court has dismissed the case concerning the Competition Council’s decision on notary fee regulations after the Ministry of Justice and the Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries withdrew their complaints.

The dispute stemmed from a December 2020 resolution by the Competition Council, which found that the Ministry’s regulation of fixed and minimum notary fees restricted competition by preventing notaries from setting competitive prices. The Ministry and the Chamber of Notaries had challenged this decision in court.

However, the Seimas’ recent amendments to the Notary Law shifted the responsibility for approving notary fees from the Ministry of Justice to the Government, making the legal dispute largely irrelevant. As a result, the applicants withdrew their complaints, and the court terminated the case, with no objections from the Competition Council.
