Lima, March 10, 2026 — Peru’s competition and consumer protection authority has launched investigations into gas stations across the country following recent restrictions on natural gas supply, aiming to determine whether consumers are being properly informed about fuel availability and prices.
The probe was initiated by the Technical Secretariat of Consumer Protection Commission No. 3 of the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi). Authorities will examine whether service stations are complying with obligations established under the Consumer Protection and Defense Code.
The investigation seeks to verify that gas stations are providing clear, transparent information about current fuel prices and supply conditions so that consumers can make informed purchasing decisions.
As part of the review, Indecopi is also checking whether service stations are accurately reporting fuel inventory levels through telemetry systems. These systems allow regulators to compare the actual stock levels at stations with the information being disclosed to customers.
In parallel, the National Directorate for Research and Promotion of Free Competition, another branch of Indecopi, has opened a separate inquiry to assess whether anti-competitive practices may be taking place in the fuel market.
Investigators will collect information to determine whether there are signs of conduct such as price-fixing agreements between competitors, supply restrictions or market-sharing arrangements. If sufficient evidence is found, authorities may open formal administrative proceedings that could lead to sanctions.
The regulator is also verifying that fuel stations maintain a complaint book and allow consumers to use it as an immediate mechanism to report grievances.
Indecopi encouraged members of the public to report potential irregularities or suspected anti-competitive behaviour through its online complaint platform, which operates 24 hours a day. Consumers can also contact the agency via email or telephone to submit reports.
The authority said the investigations aim to protect consumers and ensure fair competition in the fuel market during a period of supply constraints.
