Lithuania’s Weekend Shopping Ban May Harm Competition

The Competition Council has raised concerns over proposed legislation that would prohibit large shopping centers (300+ sq. meters) from operating on weekends and holidays. The council warns that such restrictions could distort competition, granting unrestricted retailers greater market power, potentially leading to higher prices and lower quality for consumers. While the amendment aims to ensure retail employees have more family time, the council questions why this benefit applies only to larger stores. It urges lawmakers to assess the necessity and proportionality of the ban, emphasizing that competition ensures the best outcomes for consumers.
