Greek Competition Commission Maps Animal Feed Market Conditions

February 5, 2025 – The Greek Competition Commission has completed a market mapping of the animal feed sector, focusing on feed for sheep and goats, a crucial component of Greece’s livestock industry. The study aims to assess competition levels, pricing trends, and supply chain dynamics.

Key findings indicate that feed costs represent 75% of livestock expenses, with prices rising 33% from 2020 to 2023 before stabilizing in 2024. The sector shows low concentration, with most feed sourced domestically (62.7%) and additional imports from Romania and Italy.

Sales trends vary by region, with Thessaly and Epirus leading in simple feed purchases, while Central Macedonia and Crete dominate compound feed sales. Pricing largely follows international market trends, though profit margins increased in 2023 despite falling commodity costs.

The study forms part of the Commission’s broader strategy to monitor competition in agri-food supply chains. Full details are available on the Competition Commission’s website.
