New MoU Enhances Telecom Consumer Protection in Nigeria

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen consumer protection, ensure fair competition, and eliminate exploitative practices in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

The agreement, finalized on Tuesday, establishes a collaborative framework that will streamline regulatory processes, foster market efficiency, and prioritize consumer welfare. The MoU introduces a “one-stop-shop” approach to address issues affecting telecom operators and consumers while minimizing regulatory overlaps.

A Milestone for Consumer Protection

Speaking at the signing, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive, Mr. Tunji Bello, described the partnership as aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of economic growth through regulatory collaboration.

“This partnership fosters harmonious collaboration, streamlines operations for telecoms operators, and ensures robust consumer protection,” Bello stated. He emphasized that the agreement symbolizes the convergence of two diligent agencies working to eliminate regulatory gaps.

Bello called on other sector regulators to follow this example, citing Section 105 of the FCCPA, which encourages similar partnerships to provide coordinated oversight across industries.

NCC Highlights Synergy

NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive, Dr. Aminu Maida, hailed the MoU as a testament to both agencies’ commitment to advancing consumer welfare and fair competition in the rapidly evolving telecommunications sector.

“In an era of rapid technological advancements, collaboration between regulatory bodies is crucial,” Maida said. He noted the importance of ensuring a level playing field for stakeholders and reliable, affordable communications services for consumers.

The MoU also aims to align regulatory mandates, reduce market abuses, and simplify compliance for operators, furthering the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business initiative.

A Path Forward

The partnership underscores the importance of unified regulatory oversight in addressing challenges such as market abuses, consumer rights violations, and the complexities of a digital economy.

Both leaders expressed optimism that the collaboration would drive innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in Nigeria’s telecom sector, benefiting operators, consumers, and the broader economy.

The MoU represents a significant step toward protecting Nigerian telecom consumers while fostering a transparent and competitive industry.
