The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released (15 November) its FY 2024 financial report, highlighting significant achievements in both consumer protection and competition enforcement, according to Chair Lina M. Khan.
The FTC intensified its efforts to combat fraud, deception, and privacy violations. Notable accomplishments include:
- Protecting Privacy: Focused on safeguarding the data of children, consumers, and businesses.
- Addressing Generative AI Risks: Tackled emerging AI-facilitated scams and fraud schemes.
- “Made in the USA” Claims: Ensured businesses were truthful about product origins.
- Right to Repair: Defended consumers’ rights to repair their own purchases or use independent services.
The agency filed 43 federal complaints, secured 93 permanent injunctions, and returned $267.6 million to consumers—a notable achievement given its reduced legal authority to obtain monetary redress following changes to Section 13(b) of the FTC Act.
In critical sectors like healthcare, technology, and energy, the FTC pursued 21 competition enforcement actions. Seven involved litigation in federal or administrative courts, while the remaining cases saw consent orders or abandoned transactions in response to investigations.
The FTC marked its 28th consecutive unmodified financial audit opinion, demonstrating robust management of taxpayer resources. Independent auditors identified no material weaknesses in the agency’s controls or systems.
Challenges Ahead
The agency faces challenges identified by the Office of Inspector General, including:
- Strengthening litigation efforts.
- Managing merger transactions effectively.
- Combating increasingly sophisticated scams.
- Securing information systems and networks.
Chair Khan emphasized the FTC’s commitment to protecting Americans and fostering a competitive economy, despite resource constraints.
