US DOJ Announces Antitrust Investigations Into U.S. Meatpacking Industry

WASHINGTON, May 5, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Justice has launched antitrust investigations into meatpacking operations as the Trump administration intensifies scrutiny of concentration and pricing practices in the agricultural sector.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the investigations alongside Brooke Rollins and White House trade adviser Peter Navarro during a press conference on Monday.

The officials did not identify specific companies under investigation or detail the precise conduct being examined. However, the announcement signals renewed federal scrutiny of the highly concentrated U.S. meatpacking industry, which has long faced allegations of anticompetitive conduct, including price coordination and supply restrictions.

The Justice Department said the investigations would focus on competition issues tied to meatpacking operations, while the Department of Agriculture emphasized concerns about market concentration’s impact on ranchers, farmers and consumer food prices.

The announcement comes amid broader political and regulatory attention on food inflation and supply chain concentration in the United States. Large meat processors have previously faced investigations and litigation over alleged collusion in beef, pork and poultry markets.

No enforcement actions or complaints were announced as part of Monday’s event. The Justice Department did not provide a timeline for the investigations.
