Danish Competition Authority Intervenes With Apple Over iPhone Repairs

Denmark’s Competition Council has secured binding commitments from Apple that are aimed at making iPhone repairs more affordable and accessible for consumers and independent repairers, the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority announced Wednesday.

The authority said Apple has voluntarily agreed not to impose artificial barriers to the repair of iPhones in Denmark, addressing concerns that its conduct may have restricted competition in the market for repair services.

Under Apple’s commitments, the company will ensure that:

  • independent repairers, as well as authorised ones, are able to fix iPhones without facing unnecessary obstacles;
  • replacement parts — whether new, used, original or non-original — can function with full device capabilities after repair; and
  • repair status notifications shown on repaired iPhones are objective, factual and non-discriminatory.

The Competition Council’s chair, Christian Schultz, said the commitments are expected to have a significant positive effect on the Danish market for iPhone repairs. Schultz explained that Apple’s previous practices may have allowed it to set higher prices for replacement parts and steered consumers toward buying new devices rather than repairing existing ones.

The intervention does not amount to a formal finding that Apple violated competition law. Instead, Apple’s legally binding undertakings remove the authority’s concerns that the company might have abused its market position by restricting repair options.

The action follows a complaint and decision by the Competition Council earlier this month addressing Apple’s behaviour in relation to iPhone repairs, where the authority outlined potential competition issues linked to repair restrictions.

The Danish Competition and Consumer Authority enforces the national Competition Act and may accept commitments from firms to resolve competition issues without formal infringement decisions, particularly in markets where consumer choice is impacted.
