Swedish Authority Opens In-Depth Probe into Telia’s Acquisition of Bredband2

Stockholm, October 17, 2025 — The Swedish authority has launched an in-depth investigation into Telia Company’s proposed acquisition of Bredband2 i Skandinavien AB, citing concerns that the deal could restrict effective competition in Sweden’s broadband market.

Telia, through its subsidiary Telia Sverige, and Bredband2 both provide fixed broadband services via fibre to households, housing associations, businesses, and public entities. While Sweden hosts a large number of fibre broadband providers, the five largest — including Telia and Bredband2 — control a majority of the retail market.

Following its preliminary review, the authority said it could not rule out that the merger might hinder competition. The case will therefore undergo a special in-depth investigation to assess the transaction’s potential impact on prices, quality, and consumer choice.

The authority now has three months to complete its review, with a final decision due by January 17, 2026, on whether to clear the deal unconditionally or prohibit it.
