Tokyo, October 6, 2025 — Japan’s Fair Trade Commission will convene its 24th International Symposium on October 31 to spotlight new global strategies against cartels and bid-rigging in the digital and algorithm-driven era.
With artificial intelligence and automated algorithms enabling firms to coordinate pricing or bids without direct contact, regulators are facing unprecedented enforcement challenges. The event will highlight tools such as advanced bidding data analysis and AI-assisted screening methods that are redefining cartel detection worldwide.
Leading academics and regulators, including Joseph Harrington of the Wharton School, Ioannis Lianos from University College London, and Jun Nakabayashi of Kyoto University, will present research and case studies. JFTC Commissioner Aoki Reiko will moderate a panel on countering algorithmic collusion and enhancing global enforcement cooperation.
Scheduled from 13:00 to 16:00 JST at Iino Hall in Tokyo and online, the symposium offers simultaneous English–Japanese interpretation and free admission. Organized by the Competition Policy Research Center under the JFTC and supported by the Japan Business Federation, it promises practical insights on safeguarding fair competition in an AI-driven economy.
Registration closes October 29.
