Nigeria’s Tribunal Upholds $220 Million Fine Against Meta/WhatsApp

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has upheld the FCCPC’s decision to fine Meta Platforms and WhatsApp $220 million for discriminatory and exploitative practices against Nigerian consumers.

The ruling follows a 38-month investigation into the companies’ privacy practices and consumer data policies. The Tribunal affirmed the FCCPC’s authority, dismissing the appeals filed by Meta and WhatsApp. Additionally, the Tribunal awarded $35,000 in investigation costs to the FCCPC. FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to consumer protection and fair business practices.
