Leading Competition Economists Convene in Budapest

Budapest, 24 April 2025 — Chief economists from 45 countries gathered in Hungary this week for a high-level conference on global competition policy hosted by the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) and the International Competition Network (ICN). The event, held in Budapest from 23–25 April, brought together 59 experts to discuss pressing challenges such as digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and inflation.

Opening the conference, GVH President Csaba Balázs Rigó emphasized the growing complexity of competition issues and the role of authorities in tackling inflation and digital market risks. The program featured sessions led by leading academics from universities in Toronto, New York, Leuven, East Anglia, and Queen’s, covering topics from modern antitrust tools to the economic impact of AI.

The GVH, an active ICN member, has recently led initiatives on AI and market volatility, including inquiries into Hungary’s dairy and egg sectors.
