Martin Coleman of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) addressed the British Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress, emphasizing concerns over pricing transparency, market competition, and consumer choice in the veterinary sector.
With large veterinary groups now controlling around 60% of the market, the CMA is investigating whether pet owners have access to fair pricing and sufficient competition. Concerns include high markups on medicines, a lack of price transparency on vet services, and limited awareness of ownership structures.
The inquiry has already prompted positive changes, such as more vet businesses displaying prices online and industry bodies working on transparency guidelines. The CMA continues to assess whether reforms are needed to ensure a competitive and consumer-friendly veterinary market.
