During the 2025 Competition Outlook event held on January 8, M. Fanshurullah Asa, Chair of Indonesia’s Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), emphasized the critical role of fair competition in reaching the national economic growth target of 8%. Achieving this ambitious goal would require a 29% increase in the National Competition Index (IPU), from 4.95 in 2024 to 6.33.
Key Achievements in 2024
- Case Handling: 16 competition cases and 18 SME partnership oversight cases were resolved, with fines totaling IDR 56.6 billion.
- Merger Notifications: KPPU processed 149 merger and acquisition notifications, a 2% increase from 2023.
- Policy Reform: Issued 15 policy recommendations with a 93% implementation success rate.
Challenges and Recommendations
KPPU stressed the need for stronger enforcement authority, enhanced financial resources, and amendments to Law No. 5/1999 to foster a competitive business environment. Experts also called for collaborative approaches to competition policy and increased oversight in key growth sectors such as technology, digital services, and strategic government programs.
The event concluded with the launch of a book on modern competition policy and the inauguration of the Faisal Basri Room, honoring a former KPPU member.
