The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has issued (13 December) a cease-and-desist order against the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and its affiliate bodies, including the Suburban Table Tennis Association (TSTTA), Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association (MSTTA), and Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA). The order, dated December 12, 2024, follows findings of anti-competitive conduct in violation of Sections 3(4) and 4 of the Competition Act, 2002.
Allegations and Findings
The case originated from a complaint filed by the TT Friendly Super League Association under Section 19(1)(a) of the Act. The complaint alleged that TTFI and its affiliates restricted players’ participation in independent tournaments through WhatsApp notices and restrictive clauses in the TTFI Memorandum of Association.
The CCI determined that TTFI and its affiliates held a dominant position in organizing table tennis tournaments and providing related services in India. Their actions, such as issuing advisories and incorporating anti-competitive clauses, were found to prevent fair competition and restrict opportunities for players and tournament organizers.
Corrective Measures and Order
The Commission acknowledged that TTFI and its affiliates had taken steps to address the concerns raised during the investigation, including:
- Withdrawing anti-competitive advisories and notices.
- Amending or removing restrictive clauses in their governing documents.
- Issuing advisories to promote open competition in table tennis.
In light of these corrective actions, the CCI refrained from imposing monetary penalties and issued a cease-and-desist order under Section 27 of the Act.
Implications for Sports Governance
This decision highlights the importance of ensuring fair competition within sports federations and protecting the rights of players and independent event organizers. By addressing anti-competitive practices, the CCI aims to foster a more inclusive and competitive environment for table tennis in India.
