The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has announced (9 December) an official investigation into NVIDIA Corporation for alleged violations of China’s Anti-Monopoly Law.
The probe stems from concerns over NVIDIA’s compliance with the conditions imposed in the 2020 antitrust approval of its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies. SAMR had sanctioned the merger with restrictive conditions to ensure fair competition, as outlined in its Announcement No. 16 (2020).
While specifics of the alleged violations have not been disclosed, the investigation signals increased scrutiny on global tech giants operating in China. SAMR emphasized that the inquiry aligns with its mandate to uphold market fairness and protect consumer interests.
NVIDIA, a leading player in GPU and AI hardware technologies, has yet to issue a public statement on the matter. The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for the company’s operations in one of its key international markets.
