EEA EFTA States Discuss Future of Internal Market

Parliamentarians, social partners, and foreign ministers from the European Economic Area (EEA) EFTA States convened (25 November) to discuss bolstering European competitiveness amid evolving global challenges. The annual meeting, held alongside the EEA Council, provided a platform for dialogue on the future of the Internal Market and the EEA States’ role in responding to new geopolitical and economic developments.

The meeting was co-chaired by Sigríður Mogensen from the Federation of Icelandic Industries and Karin Zech-Hoop, a Liechtenstein Parliament member, representing the EFTA Consultative and Parliamentary Committees. High-level officials, including Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, Liechtenstein’s Foreign Minister Dominique Hasler, and Iceland’s EU Ambassador Kristján Andri Stefánsson, attended the discussions.

Addressing Competitiveness in a Complex Global Context

Against the backdrop of the Draghi Report on European competitiveness, participants emphasized the importance of aligning closely with EU initiatives focused on economic security, innovation, and decarbonization.

“As participants in the EU’s Internal Market, we play a vital role in enhancing European competitiveness,” said Sigríður Mogensen. “However, we must remain vigilant to ensure we fully leverage upcoming EU measures.”

Foreign Minister Barth Eide highlighted the significance of EEA cooperation in navigating challenges such as strategic dependencies and global shocks. “Our continued dialogue with EU partners is essential in shaping policies that strengthen Europe’s resilience and competitiveness,” he noted.

Deepening the Single Market

Participants explored opportunities to eliminate regulatory barriers and further integrate the Single Market, which provides access to 450 million consumers. Karin Zech-Hoop noted that for smaller economies like the EFTA States, the Single Market has been a game-changer, significantly expanding business opportunities.

Foreign Minister Hasler emphasized the need for an SME-friendly environment, praising EU initiatives aimed at reducing administrative burdens. “SMEs are the backbone of our economies, and simplifying processes for them is crucial for growth,” she said.

Assessing Cross-Sectoral EU Initiatives

The meeting also reviewed the EFTA Task Force Report on new EU initiatives, with participants agreeing on the need for timely evaluations of their implications for EEA cooperation. The parliamentarians and social partners pledged to continue their collaboration on implementing the report’s recommendations.

Strengthening Cooperation through Dialogue

The EFTA Parliamentary and Consultative Committees reaffirmed their commitment to addressing political, social, and economic aspects of EEA matters. These advisory bodies play a critical role in ensuring the EEA EFTA States remain proactive contributors to Europe’s development.

As Europe navigates new challenges, the EEA EFTA States remain steadfast in their commitment to fostering competitiveness and securing the future of the Internal Market.
