Vienna, November 7, 2024 – Eight of Austria’s key regulatory and oversight authorities have joined forces to address the complex challenges posed by rapid digitalization and the rise of artificial intelligence. These independent bodies, including the Federal Competition Authority (BWB), Data Protection Authority, Financial Market Authority, and the Communications Authority Austria, signed an agreement on November 6, 2024, to create the “Digitalization Network” aimed at fostering cross-sector cooperation on digital issues.
The Digitalization Network will enhance collaboration among authorities with specialized roles in areas such as data access, digital infrastructure, and AI applications. This partnership highlights Austria’s commitment to strengthening regulatory cooperation to address the multifaceted impacts of digital transformation on both public and private sectors.
“Through the Digitalization Network, we can jointly work toward streamlined solutions for the challenges of digitalization and AI,” stated Natalie Harsdorf, Director General of the BWB. “This cooperative effort will ensure that our response to digital issues remains efficient and informed.”
Matthias Schmidl, head of Austria’s Data Protection Authority, emphasized the importance of coordinated regulation, noting that, “As digitalization impacts every area of life, cooperation among regulatory bodies is essential to ensure that expertise is applied consistently and contradictory rulings are minimized.”
The Digitalization Network has outlined several objectives, including:
- Regular Information Exchange and Joint Events: The network will convene to share insights, trends, and emerging regulatory needs through joint workshops and events.
- Specialist Knowledge Sharing: To the extent legally permissible, the authorities will pool resources and share sector-specific knowledge to improve understanding of digital issues.
- Coordinated Fact-Assessment: Authorities will assess digitalization-related issues within their areas of jurisdiction, ensuring sectoral consistency.
- Expert-Level Working Groups: Specialized working groups will be formed to develop collaborative solutions to challenges posed by AI, data sharing, and digital regulation.
- Unified Communications: The network will issue joint statements and position papers, establishing a cohesive voice on digital matters.
This collaboration is Austria’s response to the need for more integrated oversight as digital transformation continues to disrupt traditional sectors and regulatory boundaries. The Digitalization Network aims to keep Austria’s regulatory framework agile and responsive in the face of technological change, ensuring a unified approach to digital and AI-related challenges across various sectors, according to the authority’s press release.
