Italian Competition Authority Seeks EU Support to Improve Airline Price Transparency

3 July 2025 – Rome

Following its market investigation into pricing algorithms on air routes to and from Sicily and Sardinia, Italy’s Competition Authority has opened talks with the European Commission to push for stronger transparency and price comparability in the airline sector.

The move comes after the Authority’s Preliminary Report highlighted concerns over how base fares and ancillary fees—such as baggage and seat selection—are displayed, making it difficult for consumers to compare true ticket prices across airlines. Feedback from stakeholders confirmed these issues.

Given that nearly half of passengers purchase extra services, which contribute significantly to airline revenue, the Authority argues that improving price comparability is vital for consumer choice and fair competition. It is now working with the Commission to explore EU-level initiatives that could address the issue.
