Danish Competition Council Launches Market Investigation into Non-Life Insurance for Private Consumers

Copenhagen, 25 June 2025 — The Danish Competition Council has approved a market investigation into the non-life insurance sector for private individuals, aiming to assess whether insurance companies’ practices may be harming competition.

The investigation will focus on premiums and customer terms offered by non-life insurers, covering policies such as home, contents, travel, and car insurance. The review will particularly examine how insurers index premiums—often linked to wage developments in the private sector—and the fact that such price increases are typically not communicated separately to consumers.

Christian Schultz, Chairman of the Danish Competition Council, commented:
“Our analysis earlier this year showed that competition in the private non-life insurance market faces challenges. This investigation will determine if the conduct of insurance companies is weakening competition enough to warrant intervention. This is the first time we are using this new investigative tool, which allows us to act without breaching the Competition Act’s prohibition provisions. However, action will only follow if competition is clearly harmed and other conditions are met. The investigation could also conclude without further measures.”

Initially, 27 insurance companies operating in the non-life segment for private customers will be involved in the investigation.

The Danish Competition and Consumer Authority expects to complete the investigation within two years. The ultimate goal is to ensure a well-functioning insurance market that benefits consumers through better and more affordable insurance options.
