Google Adjusts Service Following Czech Probe

Prague, January 8, 2025 – Google has made changes to its Google Merchant Center (GMC) service following an investigation by the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition into potential abuse of its dominant market position.

Investigation Findings

The Office found indications that Google may have applied inconsistent and discriminatory conditions in the GMC service, disadvantaging certain sellers, including those marketing investment gold and silver. While some competitors were permitted to advertise these goods through GMC, others faced restrictions, creating unequal market conditions and potentially limiting consumer choice.

Google’s Response

To address the Office’s concerns, Google implemented several corrective measures, including:

  • Reviewing keyword detection processes for unsupported content.
  • Conducting manual audits of GMC records.
  • Providing competition-focused training to employees managing GMC.

Resolution

The Office deemed Google’s measures sufficient to address the concerns and opted to close the case without initiating formal administrative proceedings. The resolution highlights the importance of maintaining fair competition in online markets.

The case underscores the Office’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for market participants and protecting consumer interests in the Czech Republic.
